A Few Stray Poems
by Tom Woodard

Hard Times

Hard times ain’t hard, only hard as we let ‘em be,
Is your glass half full or empty is what they say,
Do you believe in the Love of the Lord up above?
Do you know His anointing, lighting like a dove?
Then you know, no matter, it’s gonna be a good day,
The Lord’s going to bless us somehow, someway;
There ain’t been hard times for a long time here,
There ain’t been holding just what you got as dear,
But when times were so hard in those days gone by,
People helped one another in charity and in love,
Meager meals were shared with strangers passing by,
They were in it all together as bravely they strove;
Men uprooted really would work for a little food,
The poverty of all brought forth the common good,
Families with very little gave of what little they had,
Joyful  hearts covered over all that made them sad,
Not one starved although masses were far too thin;
Now we’re facing the same horizon faced back then,
Institutions may fall, and the dollar take a big dive,
But good stalwart hearts will just rejoice to be alive;
The common folk will pull together, resolute, again,
And an awakening new day for America will begin,
Folks will share their meager fare, a place to sleep,
And God will answer, “Thou art my beloved sheep.”
Hard times will only be as hard as we let them be,
And God will be there for all, and for you and me.

All will be well my friends, when we make amends,
And return to God’s walk, that love begets and sends.

NOTE: Written in the midst of the economic crisis of 2008, in the midst of a most uncertain future for most Americans, but in the certain knowledge that whatever comes our way, no matter how hard, and at no matter how great a sacrifice, He will be with us, walking by our side and dwelling within our hearts and souls.
