A Few Stray Poems
by Tom Woodard

Patriots Enough?

The days are dark in which we live,
Oppression looming o'er our heads,
And the question which now I give,
Are there Patriots enough, not dead?
How many yet whose hearts quicken,
At the sight of our billowing Flag,
And who, if blood is to be given,
Will shed theirs not to see it dragged?
How many are even yet awakened,
To the dark evil devouring within,
Whose daily lives are overtaken,
By blows against that we're given?
Do we even know, this present age,
How precious the gift of America,
Of Liberty and each one's visage,
Now imperiled; Do we really care?
The end of Liberty appears near,
But will we fight that it not be so,
Is that Liberty, God given, so dear,
That to preserve we will to war go?
Will we, like true Patriots of old,
March barefoot in fearsome snow.
Suffer hardship and hazard cold,
Standing brave as life's blood flows,
From the breasts of tyrants and
From the breasts of fellow Patriots?
Will we fight 'til victory is ours,
Or 'til our blood soaks the sand?
Are there Patriots enough to fight,
As our fathers and forefathers did,
Or do we shrink from God's right,
Former courage with cowards hid?
Be there Patriots enough? I am one.
Stand by me, or I'll fight alone.
